Four hours to tackle one climb after another, push your limits and try to complete as many laps as possible! Whether on your own or in a team of three, take on this unique sporting challenge in La Toussuire.

4 hours from La Toussuire How far will you go?

The principle is simple: climb again and again! For 4 hours, take on the challenge of the 4-hour La Toussuire event and try to complete as many ascents as possible.

On each lap, you’ll tackle a 950-metre climb with 235 metres of elevation gain. Once at the top, it’s time to recover: head back down by cable car, take a few moments to catch your breath and let your legs regain their strength before setting off on another lap.

You can take on the challenge solo or in a team of three. In a team, there’s no relay: all three participants complete their own climbs, and the total number of laps completed by all three members is added together to determine the team’s result.

Your goal? To complete as many laps as possible in four hours and push your limits!

A short, intense route to be repeated tirelessly

A climb that gives you no respite

The climb is tackled on foot, at your own pace. The aim isn’t just to go fast: you need to learn to pace yourself, find your rhythm and conserve enough energy to tackle a series of climbs over four hours.

Lap after lap, the repetition turns this climb into a real test of endurance and muscular strength. That’s also the whole point of this format: to focus specifically on climbing, build power and learn to push your limits during a short, intense effort.

A ride down in the cable car to get back

Once you’ve reached the summit, there’s no need to walk back down: the Côte du Bois cable car will take you back to the start. A welcome chance to catch your breath before setting off on another ascent.

This cable car ride helps minimise the impact and muscle fatigue associated with the descent, whilst giving you a few minutes to catch your breath, rehydrate, recover and prepare for the next run.

Get on, get it back, and start again!

The course is based on a principle that is as simple as it is effective: a climb, a descent by cable car, then you start again. For four hours, everyone seeks the best balance between intensity, recovery and consistency to complete as many laps as possible.

It’s up to you to find your own pace and see how far your legs will take you!

A refuelling stop to regain one's strength

At the top of the course, a full refreshment station awaits participants before they head back down by cable car. A welcome break to catch their breath between two ascents and top up their energy levels before setting off on another lap.

On the menu:

  • Cereal bars
  • Fruit jellies
  • Fresh fruit
  • Savoury biscuits
  • Water and soft drinks

Everything you need to find a little something sweet or savoury to keep you going.

You can enjoy the refreshments on the spot, with views of the Alpine scenery, or take them with you on the cable car to make the most of this recovery time during the descent before setting off again to tackle the climb.

 The necessary documents

What equipment should I bring?

Although the course is short, the La Toussuire 4-hour race takes place in the mountains and weather conditions can change rapidly. Make sure you wear clothing suitable for the physical exertion and the conditions on the day so that you can enjoy the event to the full.

For your comfort and safety, please ensure you have:

  • Suitable trail running shoes with good grip for tackling the uphill sections.
  • Breathable sportswear, suitable for the temperatures forecast on the day of the event.
  • A cap or head covering, as well as sunglasses and sun cream to protect you from the sun at altitude.
  • A waterproof jacket or rain cover, essential in case the weather changes.
  • A waterbottle or flask, to keep you hydrated regularly whilst running.
  • Trail running poles, which are permitted during the race and can be useful on the steepest sections.

Also remember to adapt your kit to the forecast weather conditions. In the mountains, it’s best to bring an extra layer and rain protection, even if the start looks set to be in bright sunshine.

Finally, bring a change of clothes for after the race so you can enjoy the prize-giving ceremony and the social gathering that follows the event in comfort.
