Before becoming the resort we know today, La Toussuire was a plateau of mountain pastures where a few families would go up every summer with their herds. The resort’s history as a tourist destination began in the 1920s, with the opening of the French Alpine Club’s first mountain hut during the winter of 1925–1926. The first mountain and skiing enthusiasts began gathering there, despite access still being difficult, as there was no road leading to the plateau.
In 1937, a decisive milestone was reached with the construction of the resort’s firstski lift, at Comborcière. Designed by the Augert brothers and powered by a lorry’s petrol engine, this homemade lift marked the beginning of La Toussuire’s development as a winter sports resort. Over the decades, new ski lifts, accommodation and shops gradually transformed the plateau.
The arrival of a road suitable for motor vehicles leading up to the resort in 1949, followed by the tourism boom of the 1960s and the expansion of the ski area, helped shape the character of La Toussuire. The resort has grown, modernised and opened its doors to new generations of holidaymakers, whilst retaining its mountain spirit and friendly atmosphere. The creation of the first ski links with Le Corbier in the 1980s also paved the way for a new collective venture: the Sybelles ski area.
Today, La Toussuire proudly carries on the legacy of these pioneers and of all the men and women who have contributed to its development. Behind these 90 years lie family stories, holiday memories, first ski runs and shared moments that have left their mark on several generations. These are all memories that continue to keep the resort’s identity alive, and which we look forward to celebrating together in 2027.
