For those who are already familiar with the Galibier, why not choose the route starting from Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne that goes over the Croix-de-Fer and Glandon passes? This route will take you through the Oisans valleys.
The first pass, the Croix-de-Fer, offers a chance to take a break with a view of the Aiguilles d’Arves before continuing downhill toward the Col du Glandon, where—in good weather—you’ll be treated to a stunning view of Mont Blanc. Further south, Bourg d’Oisans—the gateway to the Ecrins Massif—marks the end of this stage. Unless, of course, you feel like tackling the 21 famous hairpin turns of the climb up Alpe d’Huez?!
To rejoin the main Route des Grandes Alpes from Bourg d’Oisans, head to the Chambon Dam and continue on to the picturesque village of La Grave. Here, the panoramic view stretching from the Emparis Plateau to the Meije Glacier is breathtaking. A true paradise for freeride alpine skiers as well as mountaineers, the legendary Barre des Ecrins isn’t far away either… Before reaching the Col du Lautaret, you can stop in the village of Villar d’Arêne, which boasts an equally exceptional and unspoiled setting.
