Tucked away on the slopes of Mont Charvin, the hamlet of Charvin is one of the best-preserved spots in Fontcouverte-La Toussuire. Away from the busiest routes, this small mountain hamlet exudes a peaceful and authentic atmosphere, where history, traditions and magnificent landscapes come together.

From Charvin, the mountain offers a remarkable panorama of the Étendard glacier, the iconic Aiguilles d’Arves and the Belledonne range. The landscape also reveals a fascinating geological feature: the unique landforms of Mont Charvin, its distinctive fault line and its impressive fairy chimneys, shaped over time by the elements.

A lively hamlet between history and traditions

Despite its remote location, Charvin is not a hamlet frozen in time. A few residents still live there all year round and keep the spirit of the place alive, such as a stonemason who practises his craft there. An artisan trade that echoes the built heritage and traditions of the Savoyard mountains.

As you wander through its narrow streets and the surrounding area, Charvin reveals another side to Fontcouverte-La Toussuire: that of an inhabited mountain, shaped by generations and deeply rooted in its history.

A religious heritage lecturer in history

Charvin boasts a rich religious heritage, bearing witness to the lives of the mountain communities of yesteryear.

The Chapel of the Purification, built in 1655 on the site of a former oratory, holds a special place in local history. In 1631, the villagers are said to have gathered there to pray for the plague epidemic ravaging the region to be averted. The chapel thus preserves the memory of a significant episode in the village’s history and of the vital role that spirituality played in mountain communities.

Not far from there, the hamlet’s church, built in the late 19th century between 1887 and 1895, bears witness to the importance of Charvin and the community life that once animated the hamlet.

Along the paths of Charvin

The area around Charvin naturally invites you to take the time to walk and admire the mountains. The footpaths allow you to explore the mountain pastures, forests and streams that shape the landscapes around the hamlet.

The La Forestière circular walk, approximately 7 km long and taking 3 hours 40 minutes to complete, offers a wonderful immersion in this unspoilt environment. Passing through wooded sections, alongside streams and through mountain scenery, it allows you to discover another side to the area, far from the hustle and bustle of the resort.

A real mountain to discover

In Charvin, you can experience the mountains in a different way. Here, there are no large-scale developments or crowded tourist spots: just a few houses, paths, unobtrusive heritage sites and spectacular views.
